To be eligible for a VA Home Loan, veterans, active duty service members, National Guard members and reservists must meet the basic service requirements set forth by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

- 90 consecutive days of service during war time or

Spouses of service members may also apply if they are the not remarried spouse of a veteran who died in the line of duty, or due to a service connected disability; OR the spouse of a service member who is a prisoner of war or missing in action; OR the surviving spouse of a totally disabled veteran whose disability may or may not have been the cause of death.
Those that do not meet the above listed minimum service requirements, may still be eligible if their discharge was due to (1) hardship, (2) the convenience of the government, (3) reduction-in-force, (4) certain medical conditions, or (5) a service-connected disability.
